Westwater Canyon is the first whitewater stretch of the Colorado River in Utah. It is an exceedingly popular trip with its classic desert scenery and several challenging rapids. Many people make Westwater their first choice for a short, challenging whitewater adventure. Westwater offers 11 rapids that range in difficulty up to Class IV, along a 17-mile stretch that can be floated in 1 or 2 days. The inner gorge of the canyon is made up of glossy black Precambrian rock. Outside of the Grand Canyon, Westwater and Ruby Canyons are the only other places on the Colorado River where this 2 billion-year-old metamorphic rock is exposed.
